The popularity of over 95,000 annual searches implies that 12 step programs are both popular and socially acceptable.

12 Step Program - Origin and Evolution

Alcoholics Anonymous pioneered the 12 step program. In fact, any organization or individual wishing to establish a 12 step program must secure permission from Alcoholics Anonymous to either adopt or adapt the “twelve steps”.

Graph 1 shows that with over 95,000 searches a year, a 12 step program is a popular approach for dealing with addictions and, clearly, with over 8,000 searches a year, Alcoholics Anonymous remains one of the most sought after 12 step programs.

Some of the popular terms in Graph 2 seem somewhat odd, such as “jewelry”. It turns out that 12 step jewelry is one example of a spin-off industry that has grown in the wake of 12 step recovery programs (giving jewelry to mark the successful recovery from an addiction), forming an unexpected but pertinent relationship to the topic of “12 step rehab”.

12 Steps - What are They?

Essentially, the 12 steps involve admitting an addiction, seeking fellowship and support of others with a similar addiction, committing to helping other addicts, making restitution with those who were also harmed by addictive behaviors and in many cases, asking for spiritual reconciliation and direction.

Interestingly, the first search phrase listed in Graph 3 is “pagan twelve steps” with 821 searches, indicating that, in some instances, the 12 step program has been adapted to exclude the Christian aspect of traditional twelve step programs.
