Since magic mushroom spores do not contain psilocybin or psilocin, the illegal active ingredients in magic mushrooms, the sale of spores and grow kits is legal in most states, except in California, Georgia and Idaho. Many websites that sell spores and grow kits, however, publish disclaimers that state that the harvesting or consumption of magic mushrooms is illegal, and that the kits are for educational and research purposes only.

Online interest in mushroom spores and mushroom growing is extensive, as evidenced in the charts below. In Graph 1, “mushroom spores” is the third most frequently searched phrase with an astounding 193,732 queries in a one-year period. This graph is also populated with numerous phrases concerning growing mushrooms. “Mushroom growing” is followed by seven related phrases, together totaling an astonishing 682,437 queries.
