According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), long-term marijuana use can lead to a marijuana addiction. Although it is unclear whether this constitutes a physical addiction, when an individual develops a dependence on marijuana and cannot function without it, they have a marijuana addiction. Additionally, some individuals will develop a tolerance for marijuana and require larger and larger amounts to achieve a high.

Search frequency research (analyzing the terms that are used to uncover desired online topics) is a powerful new research tool that reveals very interesting observations about marijuana and cannabis use. By quantifying and graphing query results for the word “marijuana” and related phrases, researchers can track trends and developments in marijuana use and the growing issue of marijuana addiction.

Marijuana Addictions – Where Does it Rank?

In order to find any reference to marijuana addictions, one has to look to Graph 3 below, where “marijuana addiction” is the 48th most commonly searched phrase (87,065 queries over a one-year period). Not surprisingly, the most commonly searched phrase is “growing marijuana” with almost 1,000,000 annual searches. Clearly, this provides insight into society’s focus when it comes to the topic of marijuana.

“Legalizing marijuana”, “legalization of marijuana” and “legalize marijuana”, also received an enormous amount of attention (1,121,229). Particularly in Canada, there have been several cases before the courts that challenge the constitutionality of marijuana prohibition. By contrast, there is almost no effort by lawmakers in the United States to decriminalize marijuana possession. Regardless, it is a topic of significant interest for many internet users.

“Medical marijuana” and its corresponding phrase “medicinal marijuana” received 1,002,839 queries. In fact, the word “medical” is the 3rd most commonly used word in Graph 2. This is not surprising considering all the different uses for medical marijuana as an anticonvulsant, antispasmodic and an analgesic. It is also prescribed for the treatment of anorexia, cancer, AIDS and hepatitis.

“Growing marijuana indoors” is another popular search with 169,882 queries. There are also mentions of “hydroponics” / “hydroponic” in Graph 2, which refers to the growing equipment needed for indoor marijuana cultivation and growth.
