Psilocybin Addictions – Psilocybin Abuse by Poly-drug Addicts

Although most experts agree that physical psilocybin addictions are not possible, studies have shown that individuals who frequently abuse hallucinogens are often poly-drug addicts. This means they are addicted to several different drugs at one time. Psilocybin and psilocin are the psychedelic alkaloids found in magic mushrooms. The United Nations has classified them as Schedule 1 drugs, making them illegal in most jurisdictions.

Addiction researchers are always interested in drugs that are used recreationally and have the potential for abuse. The following study investigates query results for online searches over a one-year period of “psilocybin”, “psilocybin addiction” and other related phrases. The graphs offer many interesting insights into the search behaviors of individuals looking for psilocybin information.

Addiction to Psilocybin Mushrooms – What Do the Query Results Reveal?

Nowhere in Graphs 1,2, or 3 is there any reference to the phrase, “addiction to psilocybin mushrooms”. In fact, even after an examination of the secondary Graphs 4 and 5, there is no reference to the word “addiction” at all (see secondary psilocybin addictions page).

The most frequently searched phrases involve general searches for “psilocybin mushroom/psilocybin mushrooms”. Other searches of note include “legal psilocybin” (730). This search may be a result of the often-ambiguous legal status of magic mushrooms and mushroom spores that do not contain the active hallucinogenic substance. Additionally, the phrase “dreams of psilocybin” (1,131) refers to a popular song by Finch; and finally, in Graph 3, the search for “purple psilocybin” (267) is a reference to the dark purple “veil” of a psilocybin mushroom that protects the gills of the fungus until it matures.

Psilocybin Mushroom Spores – Extremely Popular Search

As evidenced in the graphs, “mushroom spores” and related phrases are popular topics (totaling 68,263). The searches involve information on both buying and growing spores. As mentioned above, since the spores do not contain psilocybin or psilocin, they are not illegal and, in most places, it is not illegal to sell them. It is only the mushrooms themselves that contain these illegal hallucinogenic substances.
