Steroids Addiction – Psychological Dependency can be Overwhelming

A psychological dependence on steroids can be both overwhelming and dangerous. Although not classified as a steroids addiction, anabolic steroid dependence can lead to some serious health concerns. In addition, withdrawal from steroids has harsh side effects.

In an effort to keep pace with changing addiction trends and developments, addiction researchers rely on many different forms of statistical data. The following graphs are the conclusions of a study on online searches for “steroids” and related phrases. Innovative and forward-thinking, they identify interesting trends and topics of interest to those affected by steroids.

Side Effects of Steroids are Dependent on Dosage and Pre-existing Health Issues

The side effects of anabolic steroids depend on the extent of use and the user’s pre-existing physical condition. Side effects may include elevated blood pressure, cholesterol level changes, development of cardiovascular and coronary artery disease, stunted bone development, mood swings, weight gain, and unfavorable sexual characteristic changes in both males and females.

“Side effects of steroids” is the 8th most commonly searched phrase in this investigation (see Graph 1 below). “Side effects” and three other related phrases total an astonishing 147,581 queries. Interestingly enough, one of the four phrases “affects of steroids” garnered 20,294 phrases, a significant count of this alternative to “effects”.

Addictions to Steroids – Overshadowed by Use/Abuse of Steroids in Sports

In order to find any reference to “addictions to steroids” one needs to examine the additional graphs of this study, which are found on the secondary steroid addictions page. There in Graph 5, among the top 1000 words used in steroid searches, the word “addiction” was used in connection with “steroids” 3,529 over a one-year period.

The concentration of searches involving steroids seems to center around steroid use in sports. The second most commonly searched phrase, “steroids in sports” received an incredible 228,671 queries. “Steroids in baseball” is also extremely popular (187,018 queries) and includes two “baseball” searches from Graph 3. The controversy surrounding Barry Bonds recent home run record may account for a number of these searches. It is clear that there are serious issues concerning the use of steroids in professional sports.
