Tobacco Addictions – 28 Cancer Causing Agents Fail to Deter Tobacco Use

Smokeless tobacco, also known as chewing tobacco, spit tobacco, chew tobacco, chew, chaw, and plug, has 28 cancer-causing agents, including nicotine. “Smokeless tobacco” is the second most commonly searched phrase in this one-year analysis, with 469,083 queries. Another name for smokeless tobacco, “chewing tobacco” tops the charts with 734,193 searches. Despite the dangers of this addictive substance, it is clearly a popular search item.

Other interesting searches of note include “tobacco road” (118,166) a reference to both a tobacco producing area of North Carolina and a 1932 novel by Erskine Calwell; “tobacco mosaic” (81,349), an RNA virus that infects tobacco plants; and finally, “tobacco island” (49,250) a song by Flogging Molly.

Chewing Tobacco – How Many Related Searches?

The phrase “chewing tobacco” had five related searches in Graph 1. In contrast, the phrases  “chewing tobacco cancer” and “cancer from chewing tobacco” were both relegated to the middle of Graph 3, with only 49,045 searches.

“Tobacco ads”, “tobacco advertising”, “tobacco advertisements” are three prominent searches of interest (301,804 queries in total). This study confirms the interest in the lucrative, yet controversial world of tobacco advertising.
