Alcohol addiction professionals face an ongoing enigma... When was the last time you opened a magazine and found an advertisement for crack cocaine, heroin or methamphetamine? Obviously, never! Yet, ads for alcohol are common. Consumption is encouraged - even romanticized - by advertisers, and widely accepted by society. Alcohol addiction is a serious disease, yet alcoholism does not necessarily elicit the same connotations associated with addictions to illegal substances.

Ongoing research tracks trends and provides insight into the complex issue of addictions and alcoholism treatment. Meanwhile, an emerging form of addictions research is generating interesting statistics of online searches for alcohol addiction and related topics. These innovative studies uncover the prevalence of searches for likely, as well as a variety of somewhat unexpected phrases. (The data presented on this page is specifically related to searches for “alcohol addiction”.)

“Alcohol Detox” One of the Most Frequently Searched Phrases

Although not the most frequently searched phrase, “alcohol detox” was searched 201,760 times over a one-year period. The more general term “alcohol abuse” was queried with the most regularity at 311,287 times. See Graph 1 below.

The phrase that follows “alcohol abuse” closely is “alcoholics anonymous”. At 269,344 searches per year, it's clear that “alcoholics anonymous” is a popular and commonly researched treatment for alcohol addiction.

Treatment For Alcoholism Found Through Internet Investigation

Graph 2 identifies words that appear with greatest frequency; “treatment” (479,129), “detox” (270,732) and “rehab” (170,310). Prevalent combinations can then be referenced in Graph 1. For example, “treatment” is found within the phrases “alcohol treatment”, “drug and alcohol treatment” and “addiction treatment”.

Other interesting findings include the popularity of queries concerning “alcohol content” (42,949) (see Graph 3), as well as a major focus on fetal alcohol syndrome. The word “fetal” appeared in 238,703 internet searches.
