Millions of people around the world are victims of alcohol abuse and alcoholism. Millions more suffer the consequences of living with a teen or spouse who abuses alcohol. A significant number of people are searching for information about alcoholism on the internet, as indicated by recent addictions research. In fact, over 311,000 inquiries are made on an annual basis for the term “alcohol abuse”. But, who's looking?

“Alcohol Abuse Treatment” - Mingled among “Drug/Alcohol” Queries

This inventive study examines the specific words and phrases used to search for information about “alcohol abuse”. The findings reveal interesting statistics (see graphs below). For example, among the top ten two and three word combinations, 70% of the entries include the term “drug”.

• “drug and alcohol abuse” registers second, with 42,602 queries/year
• “alcohol and drug abuse” ranks 5th (20,009)
• “drug alcohol abuse” rounds out the top ten (13,435)

Graph 2 further demonstrates the prevalence of this word in the study. “Drug” ranks in third place overall, with a staggering 92,870 appearances among all searched phrases. “Alcohol abuse treatment” also figures prominently in the results, with 14,908 queries/year.

Searches for Alcoholism - Academic Research or Calls for Help?

From these results, can one assume that alcohol abuse is compounded by drug abuse/addiction in many cases, thus the “drug/alcohol” inquiries? Or simply that the global concept of “drug and alcohol abuse” will turn up better results? A review of the graphs provides further insight.

The fact that the terms “national”, “institute”, “statistics”, “journal”, “videos”, etc. rank high in the results, might lead one to believe that people looking for information on alcoholism are conducting general research. However, the prevalence of words such as “treatment”, “center”, “rehab”, “centers”, and “long term” seem to point to personal inquiries. The results are inconclusive, but interesting to ponder.
