Meth, Crystal Meth and Methadone Treatment - A Variety of Approaches

With so much to learn about addiction treatment, what are people most interested in when making online inquiries?

New ground-breaking addictions research gathers and analyzes online search behaviors. In this particular study, the phrases “methadone treatment”, “meth treatment” and “crystal meth treatment” have been grouped together in order to compare and contrast internet queries for all three. The comparisons garner some surprising results.

Meth Treatment Centers Do Not Top the List

Although the numbers are similar, searches for “meth treatment” (13,569 annual inquiries) are fewer than those for “methadone treatment” (15,732). The phrase “crystal meth” trails both with 8,868 yearly searches. Finding a facility is also a common quest, as “meth treatment centers” registers in fifth spot with 3,642 searches.

While the numbers are significant, it's somewhat surprising that the phrase “methadone treatment” was searched most often since statistics show that meth/crystal meth addiction is more common than methadone addiction. One possible reason for the query difference may be that those searching the phrase “methadone treatment” may be looking for either methadone addiction treatment or heroin/narcotic addiction treatment, which most often includes methadone as part of the treatment regime.

Meth and Crystal Meth Treatment

The prevalence of “methadone treatment” may also be due to the phrases “meth treatment” and “crystal meth treatment” dividing the search query results. Since meth and crystal meth are essentially the same drug (crystal meth referring to the crystalline, smokable form of meth), when their query numbers are combined, they overtake methadone treatment searches by 6,705 searches.

This is further evidenced in Graph 2, where “meth” and “crystal” combined were searched 5,215 times more frequently than “methadone”.
