Xanax Addiction - Search Frequency Research Confirms Related Findings

The search frequency data (below) on Xanax addiction supports what conventional drug addictions statistics have shown: Xanax addiction is the most prevalent benzodiazepine abuse problem and its misuse is on the rise.

A 2005 study of emergency department visits for abuse of prescription drugs (Drug Abuse Warning Network) showed that 62,020 visits were related to Xanax abuse, up from 49,842 Xanax visits in 2004. By comparison, only 18,567 visits were linked to Valium abuse, up from 15,733 in the previous year.

In this online query study, “Xanax addiction” was searched 13,151 times in a one-year period (see Graph 1 below), compared to 3,682 queries for “Valium addiction” (see Valium addiction page). The relationship of E.D. visits for Xanax addiction versus Valium addiction is remarkably similar to online query rates for these two terms, at just over three times for Xanax addiction.

Xanax Addiction “Withdrawl” a Common Phrase

These prevalence statistics are somewhat unique with respect to search frequency studies. Where a wide range of terms are usually typed to learn more about a subject online, the phrases used to search Xanax addiction are fairly concentrated.

After “Xanax addiction” (13,151), “addiction to Xanax” follows at a distant 1,108. The next most popular phrase is “symptoms of Xanax addiction” at 283 searches annually. Follow the link to Graph 4 to view the raw data from which these statistics are generated. The entire phrase “symptoms of Xanax addiction withdrawl” was recorded a surprising 278 times (note that withdrawal is misspelled in all these occurrences). The remaining results are negligible.

Symptoms of Xanax Addiction - Focused Queries

Graph 2 further demonstrates the specificity of searched terms in relation to Xanax addiction. Compared to an overwhelming 14,300 occurrences of the word “addiction”, “symptoms” appears only 285 times in the top 30 phrases and “withdrawl”, 278. Apparently, typing in “symptoms of Xanax addiction” or simply “Xanax addiction” is providing the answers that online addictions researchers are looking for. Other infrequent inquiries include “is Xanax addictive” and “how much Xanax is addictive”.
